Frequently asked questions about the Tolly Farm pet transport service.
Over time, there have been questions that seem to crop up fairly regularly, about the transportation service we offer, why we do things the way we do, what we can transport, and queries about the care of your pet during the transportation process. We have collected the most common of these questions here to give you quick, easy access to answers.
Q: Should my pet be sedated for travelling?
A: Usually we don't reccomend sedation unless your pet is highly agitated. It is a better option to acclimatise your pet to travel by purchasing their travel crate early, allowing them to become accustomed to it.
Q: Can you pick my pet up/drop my pet off from boarding at Tolly Farm?
A: Yes, we offer pick-up and drop-off as a service.
Q: What do I need to do to send my pet overseas?
A: You first need to contact the Government of the country you want your pet to travel to and ask if you need to apply for an import permit or if there are any other requirements needed. This is the owner's responsibility, however, we can help you make arrangements with the authorities in your destination country.
Q: What happens if I need to leave New Zealand urgently. Can you look after my pet before they are shipped overseas?
A: Yes, we can offer domestic boarding for your cat or dog prior to them being transported overseas, as well as arranging any vaccinations required for shipping. Please check that your vaccinations are up to date if possible, as it makes arranging transport cheaper and simpler.
Q: Can I provide my own travel crate?
A: Yes you can provide your own travel crate, however it must be International Air Transport Association approved. Furthermore, each airline has their own specific requirements, so is is best to check with us first if you intend on purchasing a crate yourself. If we provide the travel crate, we can be sure it is suitable for your pet, and the intended manner of transport (including regulatory labelling). If your crate is not suitable for your pet, then the airlines will not permit your animal to travel.
Q: How long before travelling should I purchase the crate for my pet?
A: It is a good idea to buy a travel crate at least one month before flying. This allows your pet to become used to it, and makes the day of flying less unfamiliar. If you just put your pet in the crate immediately before flying they will often become upset in the strange environment.
Q: What size travel crate will my pet need?
A: The travel crate must be large enough for your pet to be able to stand completely upright, turn around and lie down. We can arrange the selection and purchase of a crate to suit your animal.
Q: Can you put any leads or collars in the crate with my pet?
A: Yes we can, but it is better to attach these to the outside of the crate in a plastic bag. This stops your pet becoming tangled in them during transit.
Q: Can my pets fly on the same flight as me?
A: Given enough notice we can potentially arrange this for you. However, please be aware that that airline may at any time re-organise freight depending on the economics and risks involved. This is beyond our control, however, we can arrange things so it is most likely you and your pet will be on the same flight.
Q: What do I need to do to send my pet overseas?
A: Our first point of reference is the biosecurity website http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/regs/exports/animals/search Which has all the relevant regulations applied to the agreements made between each of the countries trading. If it of interest for you, you can research what import permits are required etc, or you can leave that leg work to us, as we must have a thorough understanding for every shipment we undertake. By completing our client booking enquiry form we will have a better understanding of the logistics of how you would like to travel, and from there we can advise you of additional requirements, and the time frames needed to complete each step.
